Jay-Z has spoken out about the alleged feud between himself and fellow rapper Kanye West.
Last year at a concert, West ranted about Jay-Z and Beyoncé after performing just two songs, and then ended the concert. The rapper criticized Bey for allegedly refusing to perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards unless her video for “Formation” won Video of the Year.
“Beyoncé, I was hurt ’cause heard that you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won Video of the Year over me and over ‘Hotline Bling,'” West said onstage. “We are all great people. We are all equal. But sometimes, we be playing the politics too much and forgetting who we are just to win. F–k winning! F–k looking cool! F–k looking cool! F–k being cool! F–k all that!” he said. “I’ve been sitting here to give ya’ll my truth even at the risk of my own life. Even at the risk of my own success, my own career. I’ve been sitting here to give ya’ll the truth! Jay-Z, call me , bro! You still ain’t calling me. Jay-Z, call me…Jay-Z, I know you got killers. Please don’t send them at my head. Just call me. Talk to me like a man!” Following this, West canceled the rest of his Saint Pablo Tour and checked himself into a hospital for treatment of exhaustion.
In a podcast this week, Jay-Z finally responded. “You got hurt, because this guy was talking about you on a stage,” Jay-Z said on the episode. “But what really hurt me, you can’t bring my kid or my wife into it. Like, Kanye is my little brother. He’s talked about me a hundred times. He even made a song called ‘Big Brother.’ We’ve gotten past bigger issues, but you brought my family into it, now it’s a problem. You know it’s a problem because me and him would have been talked about it, been resolved our issues,” the rapper continued. “And he knows crossed the line. He knows. And I know he knows. ‘Cause we’ve never let this much space go between one of our disagreements and we’ve had many. That’s part of who we are.”
Jay-Z also appears to diss West on one of his new album 4:44‘s tracks, “Kill Jay-Z.” Lyrics include the following lines: “I know people backstab you, I feel bad too / But this ‘f–k everybody’ attitude ain’t natural / But you ain’t a Saint, this ain’t KumbaYe / But you got hurt because you did cool by ‘Ye / You gave him 20 million without blinkin’ / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f–k was he thinkin’?/ ‘F–kin’ wrong with everybody?’ is what you sayin’ / But if everybody’s crazy, you’re the one that’s insane.”
Jay-Z addresses the words in the podcast. “It’s not even about a Kanye diss. It’s not a diss, I’m talking to myself the whole time,” Jay-Z said on the podcast. “I’m not talking about Kanye when I say, ‘You dropped out of school / you lost your principles’—I’m talking about me. The $20 million thing shouldn’t have been said,” he added. “Sometimes, you go too far.”
West has not responded to Jay-Z’s recent comments.
