Comedian and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno filed for conservatorship over wife Mavis Leno‘s estate.
The petition was filed on Friday at the Los Angeles Superior Court. The petition states that Leno, 73, wishes to have an estate plan established on behalf of his wife, who suffers from dementia. It also mentions that Mavis, 77, in her current state, is incapable of doing the planning herself.
Leno stated Mavis has no objections to the conservatorship. He has also asked the judge that Mavis does not go to the hearing set for April 9 in concern for her mental and physical health.
“Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” the filing states.
Leno also wants to ensure that his wife will be taken care of in the case that he dies before her. The conservatorship will also provide for Mavis’ brother. Because the couple have no children, Mavis’ brother is her only living heir.
The couple has been married for 43 years. One year before Mavis’ diagnosis, Leno was injured in a vehicle fire in 2022. He was also injured in a motorcycle accident months later.
