Jay Kelly, R. Kelly's 14-Year-Old, Comes Out As Transgender; Says He's Not Close To Singer Father
R. Kelly’s 14-year-old child with Andrea Kelly, Jaya, has come out publicly as transgender, revealing he’s changed his name to Jay.
Jay Kelly Comes Out As Transgender
Jay took to social media over the weekend to open up about coming to terms with being transgender and coming out to his mother and older sister. Via questions on his Ask.fm profile, Jay revealed that he’d felt as though he was meant to be a male since was “6 or 7” and at 11, he found other boys and girls like him who felt they weren’t the gender they were born.
“I would look up like boy changes to girl, and girl changes to boy, and I’m like wow, there’s people who feel EXACTLY the way I feel,” Jay said. “And then I knew like that’s what transgender is.”
“I believe I am a boy and want surgery, and the medication to help me [be] who I was supposed to be,” he added, acknowledging that he realized he'd have to wait awhile to undergo surgery.
Jay Kelly Has Support Of Mother & Older Sister
Upon realizing that he was transgender, Jay was fortunate to have the support of his mother and sister Joann.
“She was very proud of me, I was like, "Thank you mom for accepting the fact that I'm a transgender,’” revealed Jay, who added, “'And same with my sister, she told me that she was proud of me, and respects me by calling me handsome and calling me her little brother now, and I love her for that, so you know it was great for me.”
Jay also admitted on Ask.fm that neither he nor his sister Joann are close with their father R. Kelly, who divorced from their mother in 2009 after nearly 13 years of marriage. “My dad has not reached out,” the teen said.
