Jason Alexander Explains Why ‘Seinfeld’ Fiance Susan Was Killed Off

Seinfeld star Jason Alexander revealed in a recent interview with Howard Stern why his TV fiance Susan was unceremoniously killed off the show by toxic envelopes.

Jason Alexander On Susan’s Death

“The story goes that she was killed off because you couldn’t stand working with her,” Stern told Alexander, referring to Seinfeld’s season 7 arc in which Susan unwittingly kills herself while trying to mail out invitations to her wedding with George, who’s not at all interested in the forthcoming nuptials.

“This poor girl,” Alexander started. “The actress is this wonderful girl, Ms. [Heidi] Swedberg… I love her. She’s a terrific girl. I love her.”

“I couldn’t figure out how to play off of her,” Alexander offered as an explanation. When Stern said he was just being nice, Alexander added, “No. Her instincts for doing a scene — where the comedy was — and mine were always misfiring.”

Alexander said the beginning of the end for Swedberg’s run on Seinfeld was when he went to co-creator Larry David and the rest of the cast with his problems working with her. They dismissed his concerns – until Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jerry Seinfeld experienced it firsthand.

“Finally, they do an episode where Elaine and Jerry have a lot of material with her,” Alexander said, after which they acknowledged, “It’s f—ing impossible.”

“Julia actually said, ‘I know — don’t you just wanna kill her?’” Alexander told Stern, suggesting that the Veep star was actually the one who gave David the idea for Susan’s death.
