Jared Leto Wins Oscar For Best Supporting Actor, Thanks His Mother And Dedicates Award To 'All The Dreamers'

Jared Leto won the first Oscar of the night on Sunday, taking home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Dallas Buyers Club, and he dedicated his award to his mother, AIDS patients and everyone in the world fighting for their dreams.

Leto capped off his winning streak with the coveted golden statue, and the actor was well prepared for his time onstage, delivering a very eloquent speech that began with a heartwarming tribute to his mother. Leto has been thanking his mother consistently throughout awards season, and even brought her as his date Sunday night along with his brother and band mate Shannon Leto.

“In 1971…there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged her children to be creative and work hard and do something special. That girl is my mother, and she’s here tonight. I just want to say, I love you, Mom, thank you for teaching me how to dream,” Leto said, flustered with emotion as his mother looked on lovingly from the audience.

Leto also acknowledged his fellow nominees, the Academy and even host Ellen DeGeneres before ending on a more philosophical and political note. In his speech, Leto had a message for people fighting in Venezuela and Ukraine, saying, “As you struggle to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible, we’re thinking of you tonight.”

Finally, Leto dedicated his award to all those who suffer from HIV/AIDS and anybody who has felt discriminated against because of who they are.

“This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I stand here in front of the world with you and for you. Thank you very much, goodnight.”

Dallas Buyers Club went on to win Best Makeup and Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey.
