A Japanese jeweler is selling solid gold, life-sized replicas of Darth Vader’s mask for $1.4 million apiece.
Jewelry and gold maker Ginza Tanaka of Tokya has created a 24-karat gold copy of Darth Vader’s mask from the Star Wars franchise in honor of the 40th anniversary of the original 1977 film. The helmet weighs 33 pounds, measures 10.4″ wide by 11.8″ high, and is not designed to be worn. They do not feature a hollow interior.
It took ten individual goldsmiths to create the prototype of Tanaka’s gilded product, and because of its complexity, any buyer would have to wait another three months before receiving their mask.
For those unable to afford the precious collectible, gold engraved coins are also available for sale, starting at $1,200 each. They go on sale on May 4, celebrated by some as Star Wars Day because “May the fourth” is reminiscent of the film’s famous line, “May the force be with you.”
