Jane Fonda To Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award At 2021 Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced on Tuesday that Jane Fonda would be this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 78th Golden Globes ceremony. The award is annually given to a “talented individual who has made a lasting impact on the film industry.”

Fonda, a 15-time Golden Globe nominee and seven-time Golden Globe winner, will receive this year’s award for her contributions to cinema and culture as well as her activism with youth empowerment, war, gender equality, climate change and LGBT rights.

“For more than five decades, Jane’s breadth of work has been anchored in her unrelenting activism, using her platform to address some of the most important social issues of our time,” said HFPA President Ali Sar in a statement. “Her undeniable talent has gained her the highest level of recognition, and while her professional life has taken many turns, her unwavering commitment to evoking change has remained.”

Previous recipients of the award include Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey.

Fonda has been nominated for five Academy Awards and won two. Her iconic films include Klute, Youth and Julia. Most recently, she stars in the Netflix original series Grace and Frankie alongside Lily Tomlin.

Her philanthropic efforts include fundraising for the nonprofit organizations the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential and the Women’s Media Center. She launched the Jane Fonda Fund for Women Directors, an organization aimed to support the restoration of female led films from around the world.

She has participated in Fire Drill Fridays in support of climate change awareness. In 2019, she was arrested three times for protesting climate change outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Fonda released her book, “What Can I Do? My Path from Climate Despair to Action” last year. It details her personal journey with Fire Drill Fridays.

The Golden Globes will air live Feb. 28 from 8-11 p.m. ET on NBC.
