Jane Fonda Announces That ‘9 To 5’ Sequel Will Feature Original Cast

Working 1980 to 2018, what a way to make a sequel.

Fans of the 1980 comedy 9 to 5 who have been hankering for decades for another edition of revenge-fueled office hijinks got some good news from Jane Fonda. While promoting the upcoming HBO documentary about her life, Jane Fonda in Five Acts, the actress announced that she plans to appear in the currently in-development follow-up to 9 to 5 and that her original co-stars Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin will be joining her.

Speaking to reporters, Fonda said, “My role is as an executive producer, and I’m working with the writers, with Lily, and talking to the writers. Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it.”

When the project was first announced, Rashida Jones was tapped to write the script alongside the original’s co-writer Pat Resnick. The original wrung laughs out of chauvinism and misogyny in the workplace, themes that remain relevant amid the Me Too movement. Fonda implied that technology and corporate voyeurism could drive the antagonism in the sequel, which will be set at the same fictional office of Consolidated Companies.

9 to 5 was the second highest-grossing movie of 1980 (behind only The Empire Strikes Back), earning $103 million (about $355 million when adjusted for inflation). The three leading ladies have remained friends throughout the years, with Fonda and Tomlin currently co-starring as the title characters on the Netflix sitcom Grace and Frankie and the trio reuniting onstage at the 2017 Emmys.
