On Wednesday, a California judge removed Jamie Spears as conservator of his daughter, pop singer Britney Spears. “The current situation is not tenable,” Judge Brenda Penny said in her ruling.
The decision came after new allegations arose that Jamie was monitoring and recording Britney nonconsensually.
The New York Times documentary Controlling Britney alleged that devices had been planted around Britney’s home to monitor communications between Spears and her former attorney, Samuel Ingham. Spears’ current attorney, Mathew Rosengart, fired back that Jamie had crossed “unfathomable lines.” He cited the recording as a violation of Britney’s civil liberties and the newest of the long list of reasons Jamie should be removed from Britney’s conservatorship.
“All of his actions were well within the parameters of the authority conferred upon him by the court. His actions were done with the knowledge and consent of Britney, her court-appointed attorney, and/or the court,” Vivian Thoreen, Jamie’s attorney, said.
The judge appointed a California accountant, John Zabel, as temporary conservator over Spears’ $60 million fortune.
