Britney Spears‘ father, Jamie Spears, seems to have had a sudden change of heart, filing to end the 13-year conservatorship over his daughter on Tuesday. The petition was filed to the Los Angeles Superior Court and the case is currently being overseen by Judge Brenda Penny, who has the power to approve the move.
“As Mr. Spears has said, again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” the court filing said. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”
While Spears has been vocal about removing her father from the conservatorship, Jamie has obstinately repeated that he is only looking out for his daughter’s best interests and that there was no justification for his removal. Just last week, Jamie requested $2 million for his stepping down. This new development may come as a shock to those who have been following the legal battle over its lengthy duration. Fans have speculated that his sudden filing is perhaps an attempt to avoid accountability.
Spears’ new lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, seems to agree. “It appears that Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath,” Rosengart said, “but as we assess his filing — which was inappropriately sent to the media before it was served on counsel — our investigation will continue.”
Rosengart made it clear that he would continue to investigate Jamie’s alleged conservatorship abuses.
