This year’s Best Supporting Actress race was the most unpredictable Oscars category. Three of the actresses that were nominated split the awards leading up to Sunday night with Jamie Lee Curtis winning the Screen Actors Guild Award, Kerry Condon winning the BAFTA and Angela Bassett winning the Golden Globe.
When her name was announced as the winner, Curtis mouthed “shut up” in disbelief.
At the beginning of her speech, Curtis thanked the people who helped her throughout her career. “I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I am not. I am hundreds of people,” Curtis said. “To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I’ve made for all these years that thousands and hundreds of thousands of people – we just won an Oscar together.”
Curtis made her big-screen debut in John Carpenter‘s Halloween (1987), making her one of the most well-known scream queens. Her role as the IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All At Once was her first Oscar nomination and win.
Curtis won ahead of her castmate Stephanie Hsu, Angela Bassett from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin and Hong Chau for The Whale.
Curtis is the daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, two actors who were also nominated for Oscars.
