James Gunn was the director and writer behind Guardians of the Galaxy, which successfully cemented the brand as one of Marvel’s flagship properties. Gunn reprised these roles for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and he recently confirmed his return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn’s announcement came on April 17 through his Facebook page.
Notably, Gunn mentions how his love for the characters he helped define encouraged his decision to return. Furthermore, he adds his positive relationship with Marvel Studios is “the best” he’s had, and it contributed to his choice.
While plot details are scarce, Gunn acknowledges Vol. 3 will be set after the next Avengers films. Vol. 3 will wrap up the story of the current Guardians team while also setting the stage for “the next ten years and beyond.” Additionally, Gunn will collaborate with Kevin Feige in directing the future of Marvel’s mascots while preserving their integrity.
In the interim, Guardians of the Galaxy fans can enjoy Vol. 2, which will rocket into theaters on May 5. Moreover, should they crave more cosmic action, the first episode of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is out for most modern gaming consoles.
