Director James Gunn has hinted that the streamer HBO Max may be the home of a new Suicide Squad-cinematic universe. After the success of Peacemaker, Gunn is “working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to the universe,” he told the podcast Hero Nation.
While nothing has been written or officially greenlit, Gunn’s enthusiasm in the interview suggests that it’s likely to happen. He was probed more about the project later on, but he still kept things extremely vague, stating that “it won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.
Speaking of Peacemaker, Gunn said, “There’s a really good chance” for the series to return for a second season. Starring John Cena, who originally played the violent vigilante in Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker has been well-received by critics and audiences alike, with viewers praising its sharp writing, violence, chaotic tone and Cena’s performance.
The concept for a Peacemaker spinoff series apparently came about during the onset of pandemic lockdowns in 2020, with Gunn using it as an outlet to channel his stress while completing the edit of The Suicide Squad. “I was depressed, I was having heavy anxiety like a lot of us were at the time and still today,” Gunn admitted. “I needed something to take care of myself. That’s where the show comes from.”
New episodes of Peacemaker‘s first season are released every Thursday at 3 a.m. EST on HBO Max. The season finale will premiere on February 17.
