James Franco has agreed to pay over $2 million to resolve a sexual assault lawsuit.
The actor and his associates are paying $2.2 million to Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal.
Tither-Kaplan and Gaal claimed that Franco suggested his students take part in explicit sex scenes, exploiting them financially and sexually.
The settlement is pending approval from a Los Angeles judge.
Tither-Kaplan, along with other women, accused Franco of sexual misconduct in 2018.
“I can’t sleep at night knowing that my coming forward, originally, did not do the work that I wanted it to do yet,” she told The New York Times. “There still has been no action, publicly, that shows me that these people know what they did is wrong and harmful and can’t [be] repeated.”
Franco denied the allegations.
“While Defendants continue to deny the allegations in the Complaint, they acknowledge that Plaintiffs have raised important issues; and all parties strongly believe that now is a critical time to focus on addressing the mistreatment of women in Hollywood,” said the settlement document signed by both parties. “All agree on the need to make sure that no one in the entertainment industry – regardless of race, religion, disability, ethnicity, background, gender or sexual orientation – faces discrimination, harassment or prejudice of any kind.”
