Islamic State Of Iraq And Syria (ISIS) militants appeared to behead American freelance journalist James Foley in a video that was released by the group Tuesday.
In the Islamic States video, Foley, dressed in an orange prison outfit, is on his knees with his hands tied behind his back. After he delivers a speech likely written for him by his captors and an Islamic State militant says a few words, the militant appears to behead the innocent journalist, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The propaganda video begins with a clip of President Barack Obama’s announcement earlier this month that the U.S. would be making airstrikes in Iraq. It’s followed up by aerial footage released by the Pentagon that shows where the U.S. military launched airstrikes on the Islamic state militants. Then, Foley, who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria in 2012, is seen on camera in a remote location in the desert.
Foley, shot from multiple camera angles, then appears to read off a lengthy statement that was likely penned by his captors. In his statement, he condemns America for the airstrikes against Iraq, which have ultimately sealed his fate. He also implores his brother in the Air Force to reconsider his actions and for his family to see the wrongs of the American military.
"I wish I had more time," Foley says. "I wish I could have the hope of freedom and seeing my family again. But that ship has sailed."
After Foley stops speaking, a militant, with one hand on his prisoner's shoulder and another wielding a knife, begins to speak.
“Your military air force has attacked us daily… Your strikes have caused casualties amongst Muslims,” the figure, who speaks English with a British accent says. “Any attempt… to deny the Muslims their right to live in safety under the Islamic caliphate will result in the bloodshed of your people.”
In the closing moments of the video, American freelance journalist Steven Sotloff appears in the same orange outfit that Foley had been wearing. The militants threaten that if America continues to launch airstrikes on Iraq, he’ll meet the same end as Foley. Sotloff disappeared last summer from Syria.
"We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by (ISIS)," National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. "The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity. If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We will provide more information when it is available."
Obama has been briefed on the video, according to White House spokesman Eric Schultz.
