The rumors that James Cameron plans to create a prequel to Avatar are true – but those expecting another movie or perhaps even a television series in the vein of Dark Angel will be disappointed. Cameron plans to follow his blockbuster Oscar-nominated film with a prequel novel. “Not a novelization — and there is a distinction,” film producer Jon Landau tells MTV.com. “A novelization basically retells the story of the movie. Jim wants to write a novel that is a big, epic story that fills in a lot of things.”
Though his screenwriting credits include Terminator, Aliens and Titanic, the Avatar prequel novel marks Cameron’s first dip into professional novel writing. The director will fill in the backstory for Sigourney Weaver’s character and of protagonist Jake’s life on Earth. –KADEEN GRIFFITHS
