The Jamaican bobsled team has come back to the Winter Olympics after a 12-year absence, and they made sure their return made a splash with their very own theme song, “The Bobsled Song.”
The song is set to be timed perfectly to the Sochi bobsled course.
This is the first time the Jamaican bobsled team has qualified for the Olympics since 2002, though their first appearance at the Calgary Games in 1988 inspired so much fanfare, Disney made a film about it. While the Jamaican bobsled team has collected a huge fanbase, in no small part due to the Disney classic Cool Runnings (1993), their chances at gold seem awfully slim. After the first two heats, the two-man bobsled team was at the bottom of the pack, ranking number 30 out of 30. With half the competition over, they were 4.41 seconds behind first place, Russia, who went on to win the Gold on Monday, Feb. 17. The final two runs took place Monday, but Jamaica was eliminated after the first heat, with a cumulative time of 2:55.40, and placed 29th.
The two man team was comprised of Winston Watts, 46, who competed in the 2002 Games, and Marvin Dixon, 30, who made his Olympic debut in Sochi.
Of course, win or lose, the Jamaican bobsled team was the most popular team around in the Olympic village. And, their new bobsled theme song will certainly add to their bubbly persona. US bobsled star Lolo Jones posted a Vine on Twitter of a friendly dance-off between Team USA and Team Jamaica, and many other Olympians have been Tweeting their desires to meet the legendary bobsled team.
Nick Goepper, who won Bronze in slopestyle skiing last week, posted a coveted photo with the Jamaican bobsled driver to his Instagram two weeks ago.
Watts also posed for a fun photo with Australian driver Heath Spence posted to the Jamaican bobsled team’s official Instagram page.
The feeling of love is mutual, says Watts, who told the Los Angeles Times, “All the people here like us. No, that’s not correct. I should say all the people here love us. We are a caring people and we love them too.”
