Jake Gyllenhaal was photographed on the set of his new film Nightcrawler, shooting a scene on California’s Venice Beach.

Gyllenhaal, 32, plays a Los Angeles-based freelance reporter in the thriller that's set for release sometime in 2014. While working for the paper, his character Lou discovers the realm of underground crime journalism. Nightcrawler also stars Bill Paxton and Rene Russo.

Gyllenhaal, who lost a significant amount of weight for the role of the hungry reporter and grew out his typically shorn locks, is also a producer on the picture. "I'm producing it with Tony Gilroy," he told Us Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival. "We're shooting on a 24-hour schedule and we have like no money. But it's a really solid screenplay."

As for the actor’s noticeable weight loss, the body transformation is something he’s accustomed to. When Gyllenhaal was preparing for 2010’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, he gained tens of pounds in muscle. “I got into shape so that I would be able to do [the] stunts,” Gyllenhall explained to The Arizona Republic at the time. “I wanted to do those stunts and I wanted to not get injured when I did them and I wanted to be able to pull them off. The only way to do that would be to get in really good shape, like all the stunt guys around me. And I did that.”

Actors who’ve recently dropped weight for their roles include Dallas Buyers Clubs' Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson for 2011’s All Things Fall Apart and Christian Bale for 2011’s The Fighter.
