Jada Pinkett Smith Slams Golden Globes Over ‘Girls Trip’ Snub

Jada Pinkett Smith blasts the Golden Globes for refusing to even watch summer hit Girls Trip.

JADA PINKETT SMITH SLAMS GOLDEN GLOBES

Smith was upset that her friend and co-star Tiffany Haddish wasn’t nominated for her breakout role, but was even more upset with the way the Golden Globes handled the situation. “I have so much to say on why @TiffanyHaddish was not nominated for a Globe… but I won’t,” she tweeted. And then in a later tweet, added, “Actually I will… here we go…”

Then, in a 9-tweet outburst, Smith explained her issues with the Golden Globes, and more broadly about Hollywood in general. “I’m not upset about @TiffanyHaddish or @GirlsTripMovie not getting a nom… I’m discouraged about the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press/@goldenglobes wouldn’t even WATCH the movie. Girls Trip was one of the most successful films this summer & Tiff was hands down the funniest person on screen in 2017 and we couldn’t get eyes on the film or a press conference,” she tweeted. “How could a nom happen & how much more critical acclaim must a movie have to simply get a screening? But yet… Tiff has been asked to present at their ceremony. This isn’t about shaming, this is about the need for discussion of an antiquated system.”

Smith brought her argument a step further and spoke about the racist system under which Hollywood operates. She brought in films The Big Sick and Get Out to further her point, as the former did not get recognized and the latter was categorized as a comedy. “And I dare not invalidate all the many journalist and people from all walks of life who have supported this movie by defining the issue as simply… racism,” she said. “Hollywood has systems in place that must learn to expand its concepts of race, gender equality and inclusion in regard to its perceptions of art across the board. The fact that the brilliance of @TheBigSickMovie went unnoticed and the fact that one of the most prolific films of the year, @GetOutMovie, is considered a comedy… illuminates the depths of the sunken place… for real.”

Smith used her last tweet to shed light on the fact that issues like this spur conversations, and hopefully will aid in fixing the problem. “Moments like this occur so that we have an opportunity to discuss, recreate and regenerate old paradigms. It’s all about growth. Love,” she concluded.

Haddish herself responded to the snub with a tweet of her own: “Thank all of y’all for your love and support, I don’t know or care much about snubs because I’m not nasty like that!! But I love my girl Jada and I love all of you! @jadapsmith @VanityFair #SHEREADY.”
