YouTuber Shane Dawson, 31, is under fire from Jada Pinkett Smith and her son Jaden after a video resurfaced of Dawson seemingly pretending to masturbate to a photo of Willow Smith, who was 11 at the time.
“To Shane Dawson … I’m done with the excuses,” tweeted Pinkett Smith.
Jaden, 21, also tweeted, “SHANE DAWSON I AM DISGUSTED BY YOU SEXUALIZING AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO HAPPENS TO BE MY SISTER!!!!!! IS THE FURTHEST THING FROM FUNNY AND NOT OKAY IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT.”
A few minutes later he added, “This Man Was Also Doing Black Face On The Regular🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. As The Youth We Need To Support Creators Who Support Us And Our Morals. This Is Not Okay.”
These comments come after Dawson released a 20-minute video titled “Taking Accountability,” where he apologized for the offensive jokes he made in the past, most notably blackface, using the N-word and cracking pedophilia jokes.
“Blackface was something that I did a lot. Like, I did it a lot on my channel. There’s no excuse for it, there’s literally no excuse,” he said. “I made a video six years ago talking about it and I gave excuses. I knew it was wrong, I knew I never wanted to do it again, but I didn’t do the work. I didn’t actually look into the history of it and why it’s so wrong, and why people were so upset.”
In the video, Dawson did not mention Willow, who is now 19, by name, but did say that he “would never talk about a child in any way that is inappropriate.”
“That is disgusting, that is gross, it is not something I would ever do,” he continued in the video. “It is something I did for shock value or because I thought it was funny or, like ‘Oh my god, my child molester character,’ or whatever.”
In the video, Dawson cites fellow long-time YouTuber Jenna Marbles‘ (whose real name is Jenna Mourey) recent apology video, saying he was “inspired” to make his video after watching hers. In her video, she apologizes for a video of her doing an impression of Nicki Minaj in blackface, and another video with a joke about Asian people.
“I do want to tell you how unbelievably sorry I am if I ever offended you by posting this video or by doing this impression and that that was never my intention,” she said. “It’s not OK. It’s shameful. It’s awful. I wish it wasn’t part of my past.”
She went on to say that she will be taking a break and “move on from this channel for now.”
