Busy promoting the latest entry in her Cormoran Strike series of detective novels, Career Of Evil, J.K. Rowling revealed that she’s begun work on a new novel for children.
Author of the wildly successful Harry Potter series, Rowling has shied away from children’s fiction since the final Potter book was published back in 2007. Her first post-Potter effort, The Casual Vacancy, published in 2012, was a definite departure from the boy wizard’s world of magic and witchcraft, featuring adult themes and biting social commentary on middle class Britain.
Rowling’s detective series, which she chose to publish under a pseudonym to avoid the publicity storm that had accompanied Vacancy, is similarly non-child friendly, featuring gruesome murders and pitch-black humor. Speaking to the BBC about the latest installment in the series, the author herself admitted it was the only book she’s “ever written that has literally given me nightmares.”
Young fans of the author will be delighted to hear, however, that her focus will return to the genre in which she made her fortune. “I have written part of a children’s book that I really love, so there’s will be another children’s book,” she said.
This announcement comes in the wake of news that tickets for the Harry Potter And The Cursed Child stage production, which Rowling co-wrote, sold out in a matter of minutes and that filming has begun on Harry Potter spinoff film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, for which Rowling wrote the screenplay.
Most authors tend to worry about their ideas drying up but the busy Rowling worries the complete opposite, saying that she has so many “I sometimes worry I’ll die before I’ve written them all out.”
