J.K. Rowling Puts Homophobic Critic In His Place

J.K. Rowling offered a quick-witted retort to a critic who questioned her decision to make Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore a gay man in the seven-book Harry Potter series.

J.K. Rowling Defends Dumbledore In Twitter Row

On Twitter, Rowling encountered a tweet from someone who no longer could enjoy her bestselling Harry Potter series upon finding out that Rowling had imagined Dumbledore to be gay, reported The Independent. In response to the thinly-veiled bigotry, Rowling offered him a Twitter follower suggestion.

"Once u revealed Dumbledore was homosexual I stopped being a fan,” wrote Twitter user Frank Fraticelli. “Nice how u blindsided us with that one. Enjoy your billion $."

Rowling fired back at Fraticelli, “I advise you to start following Brain Souter at once. He’s much more your kind of person.” Incidentally, the wealthy Souter financed a campaign in the U.K. to keep a ban in place that concerns teaching acceptance of homosexuality in schools.

Following the back-and-forth, Rowling thanked her followers for their support in the matter.

In 2007, 10 years after the first Harry Potter book was published, Rowling revealed that Dumbledore – in her eyes – had always been gay. The revelation came when the author was asked about whether or not Harry’s surrogate grandfather had ever been in love, as a love life for the character had never been so much as alluded to in the series.

"I always thought of Dumble as gay,” said Rowling, explaining, "Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was."

Rowling further elaborated that she had to inform the screenwriter and director of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince of Dumbledore’s sexual orientation, as the script incongruously made mention of him pining for a girl in his younger years.

"I was in a script read-through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying he knew a girl once," Rowling revealed at the time. "I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter: 'Dumbledore's gay!' "
