J.K. Rowling, the celebrated author of the Harry Potter series, is under fire once again after claiming there are “no trans kids” and asserting that people cannot be “born in the wrong body.”
In a post shared on X, Rowling responded to a critic who accused her of targeting transgender children, writing: “There are no trans kids. No child is ‘born in the wrong body.’ There are only adults like you, prepared to sacrifice the health of minors to bolster your belief in an ideology that will end up wreaking more harm than lobotomies and false memory syndrome combined.”
The post sparked a polarized reaction, with many expressing support for Rowling, while others condemned her views. Supporters praised her as a “hero” and commended her for “standing firmly on the side of truth.”
Critics, however, accused her of denying the experiences of transgender youth, with one commenter arguing, “Most transgender adults were once transgender children. Denying their existence doesn’t erase them; it makes it harder for them to get the support and care they need.”
This is not the first time Rowling has faced controversy over her stance on transgender issues. She previously supported Maya Forstater, a researcher who argued that people cannot change their sex, leading to backlash and distancing from colleagues.
Despite public criticism, Rowling has remained steadfast, arguing that terms like “people who menstruate” and “cisgender” are examples of “ideological language.”
Earlier this year, Rowling revealed that some colleagues who had publicly criticized her privately reached out to confirm their friendship. In August, she described Algerian boxer Imane Khalife, who failed to meet gender eligibility criteria, as a “male who knows he’s protected by a misogynist sporting establishment.”
Rowling’s stance has also drawn criticism toward her involvement in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Despite complaints, HBO defended her role as an executive producer, stating in a statement to Variety: “JK Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”
