Last Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days, and suspended refugee admissions for 120 days.
Protesters took to the streets and major airports across the U.S., including the airports of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Dallas, JFK, Raleigh, Houston, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, and more.
Though Trump has been at the receiving end of much of the outrage, Vice President Mike Pence hasn’t been immune either.
On Sunday, Harry Potter writer J.K. Rowling dug up tweets from Pence and took aim.
In 2015, when Pence was governor of Indiana, he had tweeted, “Calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional.”
Rowling followed this up with a tweet of her own, quoting a line from the Gospel of Matthew: “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
Rowling faced her own share of backlash from her tweet, with one man tweeting, “You’re a grown ass woman whose entire career is based on stories about a nerd who turns people into frogs. Stay out of politics.”
The author retorted with her clever quip, shown below:
Rowling had always been vocal against Trump. In December 2015, Rowling said the Harry Potter villain Voldemort was “nowhere near as bad” as the then-presidential candidate.
After Trump’s electoral win, Rowling tweeted to her 9 million followers: “We stand together. We stick up for the vulnerable. We challenge bigots. We don’t let hate speech become normalised. We hold the line.”
