Ivanka Trump, daughter and advisor to President Donald Trump, showed her support for the highly controversial Goya Foods on Twitter on Tuesday.
She posed with a can of Goya beans and wrote, “If it’s Goya, it has to be good. Si es Goya, tiene que ser bueno.”
As the tweet blew up, many took to the social media to say that Ivanka was abusing her government position in order to support a business, which would be in violation to an ethics law that states, “An employee shall not use or permit the use of his Government position or title or any authority associated with his public office to endorse any product, service or enterprise.”
GOP operative Liz Mair pointed this out by responding to the tweet, “You’re about to get dinged for a violation of ethics rules that apply to you as a White House staffer.”
White House spokeswoman Caroline Hurley stated, “Only the media and the cancel culture movement would criticize Ivanka for showing her personal support for a company that has been unfairly mocked, boycotted and ridiculed for supporting this administration — one that has consistently fought for and delivered for the Hispanic community. Ivanka is proud of this strong, Hispanic-owned business with deep roots in the U.S. and has every right to express her personal support.”
The controversy over Goya started when the CEO of the company Robert Unanue said that the country is “blessed” to have Trump as a president and that he is an “incredible builder.” This led there to be a massive boycott of Goya food products.
Unanue told Fox & Friends that the boycott goes against his freedom of speech. He said, “So you’re allowed to talk good or to praise one president, but you’re not allowed, when I was called to be part of this commission to aid in economic and educational prosperity and you make a positive comment, all of a sudden that’s not acceptable.”
President Trump took to Twitter to show is support for Goya on July 10. He said, “I LOVE @GoyaFoods!”
