On Tuesday, Ivanka Trump announced that she is shutting down her fashion brand company in favor of her recent career in politics. President Donald Trump hired his daughter as a senior adviser at the White House 17 months ago and she stopped working directly with the company. Trump, however, was still profiting from the brand which caused public outcry from anti-Trump activists.

Activists called for a boycott of all Trump products when Donald Trump took office. His daughter’s brand was counted among them. The company had experienced high sales since its founding in 2014, but profits dropped drastically after the boycott. In February of 2017, Nordstrom announced that they would drop the brand since it had become so unprofitable. President Trump took to Twitter to express his outrage over how “unfairly” Nordstrom had treated his daughter. This caused more public controversy as activists said that Trump was using his position of power to endorse his daughter’s company. Trump’s counselor Kellyanne Conway later directly urged Americans to “go out and buy” Ivanka Trump’s products when she appeared on Fox & Friends and also came under fire.

Trump informed the company’s 18 employees that she was shutting the business down. In an official statement to CNBC, she said that she wanted to avoid any potential conflicts of interest and focus on her role as senior adviser. Trump said she doesn’t know if she will ever return to the fashion industry. Items from Trump’s brand will still be available through various retail outlets until they sell out.
