Italian swimmer Thomas Ceccon was found sleeping outside on the grounds of the Olympic Village after complaining about the accommodations of the games.
On Saturday, Saudi rower Husein Alireza shared a photo of the swimmer asleep on a towel under a tree inside the Village after he won the gold medel for the 100-meter backstroke.
“Rest today, conquer tomorrow,” Alireza wrote alongside the image.
The photos came just days after Ceccon criticized the conditions that the athletes have to endure while competing.
“There is no air conditioning in the Village, it’s hot, the food is bad,” he told The Sun. “Many athletes move for this reason: it’s not an alibi or an excuse, it’s the reality of what perhaps not everybody knows.”
“I’m disappointed that I didn’t make the final, but I was too tired,” he continued. “It’s hard to sleep both at night and in the afternoon. Here, I really struggle between the heat and the noise.”
This is not the first time the amenities in the Olympic Village have garnered attention. The International Olympic Committee has faced backlash for making athletes sleep on cardboard beds, which many joke are for “anti-sex” purposes. There have also been other complaints about the food.
Many athletes even left the Village in pursuit of alternative housing.
