Issa Rae Calls Out Hollywood’s Protection Of ‘The Flash’ Star Ezra Miller

Issa Rae is putting her industry on blast for the way it is treating a problematic star with kid gloves.

Rae, who is executive producing the new sitcom Rap Sh!t, is one of the few voices in Hollywood to protest the fact that Warner Bros. is likely going to move ahead with Ezra Miller as star of The Flash despite the actor’s continuous legal issues.

Rae was first asked about the state of Hollywood following the #MeToo movement, and didn’t hold back there either.

“It feels like we’re regressing,” Rae said frankly. “[Hollywood] is literally the worst industry when it comes to punishing people for misdeeds and actions, because money will always reign supreme.”

“I don’t have to work for everybody. All money isn’t good money. All people aren’t good people,” Rae added pointedly.

Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, has reportedly entered mental health treatment as of this August, but had spent most of this year racking up charges of harassment and other crimes against people in places like Hawaii, Vermont and Massachusetts. Several families have obtained protection orders against Miller and accused them of grooming and emotionally manipulating their teenage children.

Just one of these stories would have been enough for Warner Bros. to fire a non-white star. Even given the extra complication that the studio has a whole movie filmed like they do with The Flash starring Miller, it still reads as a strange move when completed films like Batgirl have been unceremoniously canned too.

Rae brought the conversation to Miller by saying, “The stuff that’s happening with Ezra Miller is, to me, a microcosm of Hollywood. There’s this person who’s a repeat offender, who’s been behaving atrociously, and as opposed to shutting them down and shutting the production down, there’s an effort to save the movie and them.”

Miller has still been working on The Flash, which is currently in post-production, and it was reported that they were on set for some pickup shots just last week.

The film is slated for a June 2023 release.
