Apple’s keynote took place on September 12, unveiling the company’s upcoming products to the world. Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were predictably presented, showcasing the next traditional generation of the smartphone. However, Apple revealed another member in their smartphone lineage: the iPhone X.
The iPhone family began its life ten years ago, and the iPhone X — pronounced “iPhone Ten” — is celebrating that milestone. Apple’s Tim Cook insists the X will prove to be “the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone.” So, what will make it so revolutionary?
To start, this is the first iPhone to provide an OLED display, which will be enhanced by support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. Its sizable 5.8-inch screen will impress the eye with a 2436×1125 resolution spanning 458 pixels per inch. It also comes with what Apple refers to as Super Retina Display, meaning you can enjoy an “HDR display with a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio.” Plus, Apple’s designers accounted for the edges of the full-screen display, meaning the picture quality will remain clear even along the side of the phone.
The X is 5.65 inches high, 2.79 inches wide and 0.30 inches deep. It weighs 6.14 ounces, so it shouldn’t be hard to carry around town. Plus, the glass that composes the phone is allegedly “the most durable glass ever in a smartphone, front and back.” Not only is it built with surgical‑grade stainless steel, the X should prove to be water- and dust-resistent, too.
Probably the biggest divergence from prior iPhones would be the removal of the iconic front button. Instead, several of its functions — such as activating Siri — are now covered by the phone’s side button. Gestures are also an intuitive way to control your phone.
Much like its sibling, the iPhone 8, X makes use of Apple’s A11 Bionic chip and can charge wirelessly with a Qi charger. Unlike its peers, however, the iPhone X offers Face ID. Moreover, the camera has received enhancements.
Countless reactions to the iPhone X can be found on Twitter. Some are positive, others contain lighthearted jokes or express concern over the smartphone.
While the iPhone X wasn’t the only product showcased at Apple’s conference, it was probably the focal point of the show. Apple’s upcoming benchmark for mobile technology will launch on November 3, although pre-orders will begin on October 27. This phone will certainly become a premium model, given its $999.99 price point. Two colorations — space gray and silver — will be available.
