The Interview’s New York City premiere, which was supposed to be held Thursday evening, has been canceled following violent threats from the Sony hackers.

‘The Interview’ Premiere Canceled

Landmark Theatres, which was scheduled to host the New York premiere of The Interview at Sunshine Cinemas in the Lower East Side, announced that it was canceling the scheduled event Tuesday evening, reported Deadline. Additional theaters have also decided against showing The Interview, including Carmike Cinemas, which operates 278 venues across the country.

Due to the threat, Sony said that they wouldn’t object to theaters not showing the film. As a further precaution, stars Seth Rogen and James Franco have canceled all promotional events for this week.

The Sony hackers, known as the Guardians of Peace, take issue with The Interview due to its portrayal of the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The group has apparently been putting pressure on Sony to shelve the film and has been releasing leaked information to injure the major Hollywood studio. While earlier threats mostly concerned business emails and private information, the latest threat from Guardians of Peace turned violent.

We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.

Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.

We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)

It is alleged, though unproven, that the hacks and threats are coming from North Korea. The North Korean government has condemned The Interview, but has maintained that the cyber attacks are not connected to them.

Sony has yet reveal if it plans on shutting down the comedy all together in light of the increasingly hostile threats. The Interview is currently slated for wide release Christmas Day, Dec. 25.
