Influencer Andrew Tate, 38, has been released from house arrest by a Romanian court, his legal team claims.
The former boxer and reality star was initially locked up at his Romanian home in August as he faces allegations of assault. Additionally, he and his brother, Tristan Tate, have been held on human trafficking charges.
At the time, prosecutors opened a second criminal investigation against him and his brother – along with four other suspects – over claims of trafficking minors, intercourse with a minor and money laundering.
They have all adamantly denied the charges.
Now, the controversial star has been put under judicial control, meaning he can travel through Romania while abiding by particular legal conditions.
“Once again, this decision highlights the Romanian justice system’s commitment to fairness and transparency, showcasing its dedication to upholding due process and the rule of law,” his lawyers said in a statement.
A separate case against the brothers was sent back to prosecutors by the Court of Appeals in Bucharest in December for the second time, saying it could not move forward in its current state.
Additionally, the brothers have been accused of tax evasion in the U.K. In December, a British court ruled that police were able to seize more than $2.4 million as the pair failed to pay over $21 million in revenue from their online businesses.
In response to the ruling, Tate said, “This isn’t justice, it’s a co-ordinated attack on those who challenge the system.”
Initially, Tate rose to fame after a quick appearance on Big Brother. His brief stay on the reality show was due to alleged footage of him beating a woman.
Following the show, Tate built an online presence that largely appealed to teenage boys. Much of the content – masked as lifestyle advice – has been deemed sexist and promoting violence against women.
Tate has previously been banned on social media platforms for expressing his controversial views, continually claiming that he has been “set up.”
