Robert Downey Jr.’s son Indio Downey pleaded guilty to drug charges on Friday and was subsequently sentenced to a drug diversion program.
Indio Downey pleaded guilty to cocaine possession at a California court. During his plea, Indio took the opportunity to thank Superior Court Judge Keith L. Schwartz for allowing him to enter the diversion program instead of facing jail time, reported the New York Daily News. He also promised to take the judge’s advice to listen to whatever guidance his father might have for him to deal with his drug addiction.
"I appreciate this opportunity and I intend to make the most of it," Indio Downey told Schwartz.
Indio Downey was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance back in August following his June arrest. The son of the Iron Man star had been a passenger in a car in West Hollywood that was pulled over by area cops. At the time, Indio was allegedly smoking a substance out of a pipe and was found to have cocaine in his possession.
Robert Downey Jr. infamously struggled with drug and alcohol addiction when he was emerging as a leading man in Hollywood. Upon his son’s initial arrest, Downey thanked the police for intervening for the sake of his son while also acknowledging the hereditary nature of addiction.
“Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it,” he said in a statement. “Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being."
“We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale,” Downey added.
