British actor Idris Elba believes the next person to play James Bond should be a woman.

“There’s no such thing as a black Bond,” Elba told Variety. “Are we interested in having a character, a Bond character other than being a male? It could be a woman. It could be a black woman, it could be a white woman.”

People have been gunning for Elba himself to play Bond, and Steven Spielberg has supported the idea in the past.

IDRIS ELBA uBIO: HIS STORY IN HIS WORDS.

“I think Idris would be my first choice of Bond if Daniel [Craig] decides not to come back,” Spielberg told Express in 2016.

However, there has been some backlash against the idea of, in Spielberg’s words, a “Bond of color.” Elba himself is famous for repeatedly shutting down all talk of him portraying the fictional secret agent.

“I’m probably the most famous Bond actor in the world, and I’ve not even played the role,” Elba told The Telegraph in 2015. “Enough is enough. I can’t talk about it anymore.”

Seven different actors have played the iconic character over the last several decades: Barry Nelson, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig. Craig will return as Bond in the currently untitled film that will be in theaters in 2019.

But Elba seems to think it’s time for a change.

“Do something different with it,” Elba said. “Why not?”
