Broadway star Idina Menzel took to the stage at the 2014 Academy Awards to sing “Let It Go” from Frozen.
Menzel, clad in a cream-colored dress, with floral detailing, belted out “Let It Go” live for the Oscar audience. She recorded the song for Frozen, in which she voiced the character of Queen Elsa of Arendelle, otherwise known as the Snow Queen.
Best known for playing the role of Elphaba in the Original Broadway Cast of Wicked and Maureen in Rent, Menzel was cast as Elsa by director Chris Buck because of the unique quality of her voice that can portray a multitude of emotions.
"Idina has a sense of vulnerability in her voice,” Buck has said. “She plays a very strong character, but someone who lives in fear—so we needed someone who could portray both sides of the character, and Idina was just amazing."
Though Menzel is one of the best-known stars of Broadway, who has also appeared in a number of features, John Travolta revealed himself to be quite unfamiliar with the famous singer. When Travolta introduced her to the stage, it sounded as though he called her “Adele Dazeem.” Travolta’s gaffe, spawned a number of parody twitter accounts.
Frozen won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, while “Let It Go” writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won the award for Best Original Song.
