Iconoclastic Fashion Designer Vivienne Westwood Dies At 81, Celebrities Pay Tribute

Celebrities like Kim Cattrall, Yoko Ono, Bella Hadid and more are mourning the loss of iconic British fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood, on social media.

Cattrall called Westwood “a true genius who never lost her northern grit.” The Sex and the City actress added, “I’ve never forgotten her generosity and kindness…RIP Vivienne. You are a legend.”

English singer Boy George tweeted a selfie of him and Westwood and wrote, “R.I.P. to the great and inspiring Vivienne Westwood who led us through punk and beyond. Laughed at by the fashion industry but without question, she is the undisputed Queen of British fashion.”

Fellow fashion designer Victoria Beckham also remembered Westwood fondly in a touching Instagram story. “I’m so sad to learn of the passing of legendary designer and activist Dame Vivienne Westwood. My thoughts are with her family at this incredibly sad time,” she wrote.

“Rest in peace, Vivienne,” Ono, acclaimed artist and musician, contributed to honoring the legend. “What a woman – so young at heart, motivated, beautiful and elegant. Our love and deepest condolences go out to Andreas, Ben, Joseph and families. Love, yoko”

Evidently, Westwood’s impact was also felt by the younger generation. “Dearest Vivienne, Queen of punk, from that first day I met you to the last day I saw you, you made me smile, listen, learn and love more than the day before,” Hadid captioned her Instagram tribute post. “I will forever be grateful to have been in your orbit, because to me and most, in fashion and in humanity, you, Vivienne, were the sun…”

Westwood’s passing was announced by her fashion house on Thursday. “Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She led an amazing life,” it wrote.

No cause of death has been disclosed.
