A recent photo shows the bow of the Titanic beginning to decay at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean.
New images show the bow missing a large section of the railing, emphasizing the changes it has undergone since its sinking in April of 1912. The 15-foot section of the railing was found on the sea floor by underwater robots this summer.
The bow is perhaps the most legendary part of the ship, made famous by the film named after the ship.
“The bow of Titanic is just iconic – you have all these moments in pop culture – and that’s what you think of when you think of the shipwreck. And it doesn’t look like that anymore, director of collections at RMS Titanic, Inc., Tomasina Ray told the BBC. “It’s just another reminder of the deterioration that’s happening every day.”
“People ask all the time: ‘How long is Titanic going to be there?’ We just don’t know but we’re watching it in real time,” he continued.
According to RMS Titanic Inc., the section of the bow probably fell off sometime within the past two years.
The Titanic continues to captivate the public’s imagination. Last year, five people died in the Titan submersible when the craft imploded on a trip to visit the Titanic wreck.
