Sharknado 2: The Second One, which is returning Ian Ziering in the lead role, began filming at Times Square in New York City on Thursday.

Sharknado 2 Films In New York

While filming in "The Crossroads of the World" in the Big Apple, Ziering shot scenes with Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath on top of a yellow taxi. Also joining the guys on the hood of the cab were Vivica A. Fox and former Taxi star Judd Hirsch.

Sharknado 2: The Second One is the sequel to the surprisingly successful SyFy made-for-TV movie that came out last summer. The original movie, based in Los Angeles, was a hit with viewers. During the original airing on the network, Sharknado was the subject of 5,000 tweets per minute.

With the sequel, SyFy is moving the campy “natural” disaster epic across the country. "A freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City,” read a press release for the sequel. “Unleashing a Sharknado on the population and its most cherished, iconic sites."

"'Sharknado' was an extraordinary 'perfect storm', which captured the attention of movie fans across the globe," Thomas Vitale, Syfy's chief of programming and original features, explained to the New York Daily News. "By reassembling the creative team — and dropping sharks onto New York's iconic sites — we're unleashing yet another 'fin' wave of shark-mania."'

Along with Ziering, American Pie actress Tara Reid is returning for Sharknado 2. Joining first-time Sharknado stars McGrath, Fox and Hirsh are Kelly Osbourne, Andy Dick and Judah Friedlander.
