‘I Have A Dream' Speech Anniversary Honored In Google Doodle

Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream “ 50 years ago today on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Today, Google pays tribute to the iconic moment in American history with its Google Doodle.

The logo on Google’s homepage depicts King delivering his speech from the podium with his arm raised passionately before a crowd of people shown in silhouette. Google’s logo appears in the muted browns of the design, with the “L” replaced by the image of the Washington Monument. Another layer of the doodle, features an excerpt from the speech itself.

On Aug. 28, 1963, King and other civil rights activists gathered in Washington D.C. to call for both civil and economic rights for all American people. Over 250,000 people turned out for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, but millions would eventually hear the words of the speech that would forever mark the event.

Following the March on Washington, King and the other speakers and leaders were given an audience with President John F. Kennedy, where civil rights legislation was discussed. The meeting has often been hailed at the catalyst for the passage of both the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
