Who is The Most Hated Man on the Internet? Netflix’s latest three-episode docuseries tells the story of Hunter Moore, a Sacramento, California native who created the revenge porn site IsAnyoneUp.com, his victims, and a mother who shut the entire operation down.

Who Is Hunter Moore?

Moore initially set up the site in 2010 as a nightlife website, but it took a different turn once he posted nude photos, complete with the name, address, occupation, social media and phone number of a girl he was dating without consent. Moore noticed that the post had acquired over 14,000 views, and seeing dollar signs, was quick to capitalize on the post’s success.

Moore had gained a following of ex-boyfriends and boyfriends who sent him pictures to post on the site. Like the first post, these photos were accompanied by the subject’s name and personal information, making the pictures easy to find online by the victim’s family, friends, coworkers and everyone else.

Moore, greedy for content, also paid a hacker to hack into people’s computers and post photos found in their files.

Over the course of its 16-month existence, Moore posted nude photos of schoolteachers, housewives, mothers and even a woman in a wheelchair onto IsAnyoneUp.

He claimed that he was not liable under the Communications Decency Act of 1996, the same act that protects Facebook, which does not allow platforms to be held accountable for user-submitted content.

A self-proclaimed “professional life ruiner,” Moore refused to take down pictures on request. At the site’s peak, IsAnyoneUp had an estimated 350,000 unique visitors a day and was generating Moore an estimated $30,000 a month.

The site flourished until Moore posted pictures of actress/waitress Kayla Laws, which marked the beginning of the end for IsAnyoneUp.

After Kayla’s mother, Charlotte Laws, was dismissed by L.A. police, lawyers and even internet providers, Charlotte took matters into her own hands and began building a file on Moore.

The mother, with two master’s degrees in Professional Writing and Social Ethics, amassed a database on Moore by speaking to over 40 victims all over the world and eventually handed the files to the FBI in 2012.

“It’s pure misogyny. It’s about hating women. It’s about hurting them,” Law said to The Guardian. “That’s the whole purpose of the site. It wasn’t about the pictures. There were hundreds of people self-submitting photos, but they’re not victims because they are saying: ‘Hey, you can post my nude picture.’ But that wasn’t interesting. The thing is humiliating people. The kind of people who would never post their photo on a site like that, and who have a lot to lose. Who have high-profile jobs, or could have their entire life destroyed. That’s what he found enjoyable. That’s what his followers found enjoyable.”

Charlotte worked with FB agents and found Moore’s ties to a Charlie Evans, the hacker responsible for stealing all the photographs.

Forced to end all operations in 2012, Moore sold the site to anti-bullying activist James McGibney.

Moore was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for charges of hacking and identity theft in February 2015. Evans was sentenced to 25 months in prison. Moore was released in May 2017.

Following his release from prison, Moore announced that he’s working on EDM music and a tell-all book IsAnyoneUp?, which was released in 2018.

Moore is banned from multiple social media platforms but is active on Twitter, where he recently tweeted: “Look guys, I did my time behind bars. Living my life peacefully now, it’s been a decade about what happened. Some of you loves me, most of you hates me, if you want me to apologize well I wouldn’t. I don’t owe anyone anything.”

The Most Hated Man on the Internet is now available to stream on Netflix.
