Hulk Hogan appeared on Good Morning America Monday to address using the N-word and his resultant firing from the WWE.
“I’m not a racist, I never should have said what I said; it was wrong, I’m embarrassed by it,” Hogan told Good Morning America‘s Amy Robach, explaining that it was a word he had grown up around. “The word was just thrown around like it was nothing.”
In a leaked audio of Hogan, the former wrestler repeatedly refers to his daughter Brooke Hogan‘s boyfriend with the racial epithet. Hogan says that the racist language was used at a low point in his life.
“I was at the lowest point of my life to the point where I wanted to kill myself,” Hogan said.
In a plea for forgiveness, Hogan asked that those who’ve followed his career look at who he’s been outside of the unfortunate comments that were recorded.
“Oh, my gosh. Please forgive me. Please forgive me,” he said. “I think if you look at the whole picture of who Hulk Hogan is, you can see over all the years that there’s not a racist bone in my body.”
As a result of the leaked video, the WWE decided to fire Hogan. Hogan seems to disagree with the company’s decision, believing that people should not be judged on one thing they have said in the past.
“If everybody at their lowest point was judged on one thing they said and let’s just say in high school, you may have said one bad thing and all of a sudden, your whole career was wiped out today because of something you said 10 or 20 years ago, it’d be a sad world,” Hogan said on GMA. “People get better every day. People get better.”
