Howard Stern was tasked with delivering the eulogy at Joan Rivers’ funeral on Sunday, and as the iconic comedian would have wanted, he was unfailingly irreverent.

Stern began his eulogy with a joke about the 81-year-old Rivers’ vagina, deadpanning, “Joan Rivers’ only problem was that she had a dry vagina.” He then added, “Whitney Houston’s bathtub death would’ve been averted if her vagina was that dry because it would’ve sucked up all the water and she’d have floated.”

The shock jock’s joke duly shocked those in attendance to say goodbye to Rivers,’ whose own brand of humor was often raunchy and at times polarizing. It was a commonly held belief following the funeral that the proceedings were as Rivers would have wished – a celebration of life filled with laughs.

“The most poignant moment was when Howard Stern started off the whole event by talking about how dry Joan’s vagina was,” said TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz, according to CNN. “And it was such a classic example of how she could take a very sad process and make light of it.”

Geraldo Rivera said of Stern’s eulogy, appreciatively, “There was a lot of laughs. He started off with a vagina joke, and it went on from there." He continued, “It was exactly the show Joan wanted — hilarious, irreverent.”

Billy Bush took to Twitter to share similar sentiments about the unorthodox service.

"Nothing was off limits. Comedians have a responsibility to shine a light on the darkest things in the world, that's what Joan did,” said comedian Jeffrey Ross, according to the Jerusalem Post. “People really addressed that today."
