'How To Train Your Dragon' Character Gobber Is Gay
How To Train Your Dragon character Gobber apparently comes out as gay in the film’s sequel, which is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival Friday night.
How To Train Your Dragon's Gay Character
In the movie, Gobber, voiced by comedian Craig Ferguson, plays second-in-command to Berk leader and Hiccup’s father Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler). In a scene in which the wooden peg-legged Viking tough guy and trainer watches a husband and wife bickering with one another, he states that that – and another thing – are the reasons why he has never married.
"When we were recording Craig Ferguson, I had written the line, 'This is why I never got married,' and he, as he often does, added it as an ad lib and he said, 'Yup, Gobber is coming out of the closet,'" openly gay How To Train Your Dragon writer and director Dean DeBlois told E! News.
"I think that's a really fun [and] daring move to put in,” DeBlouis added, crediting Ferguson’s voice acting. “I love the idea that Gobber is Berk's resident gay."
Joining Ferguson, Butler and Jay Baruchel, who voices Hiccup, for the sequel are Kit Harington, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, America Ferrera, T.J. Miller and Djimon Hounsou.
How to Train Your Dragon is slated for wide release June 13.
