‘How I Met Your Mother’ Recap: Marshall Tells Lily About His Judgeship In ‘No Questions Asked'

How I Met Your Mother left off last week with Marshall (Jason Segel) in a panic after an incensed Daphne (Sherri Shepherd) sent a text to Lily (Alyson Hannigan) from his phone revealing that he was offered (and accepted) a judgeship, thereby ruining their plans to move to Rome together.

In a damage control effort, Marshall decides to cash in on a “No Questions Asked” friend statute with Ted (Josh Radnor), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders). Somehow, some way, he asks them to keep Lily from reading the text that had just been sent to her phone. What follows is three foiled attempts and three flashbacks to Marshall helping each of them out of verifiably sticky situations.

Ted, who Marshall helped out of a mailbox, attempts to sneak into Lily’s room through the window after scaling up a pipe. Since Lily thinks the room is already haunted – by a hook-handed killer – Ted only succeeds in further freaking her out.

As for Barney, he’s repaying Marshall for that time he rescued him from the hospital that thought he was a risk to his own life after consuming living versions of the marshmallows featured in Lucky Charms cereal. He tries to get to Lily’s room and her cellphone via the air ducts. Also, not surprisingly, a fail.

Last was Robin, with arguably the best plan – riding in on a room service cart loaded with plates of food. She was repaying Marshall for that time he saved her from a pack of spandex suit-clad revelers, while she donned a shiny purple one of her own. Despite her efforts, Lily was just annoyed at the plethora of unwanted food and the third interruption.

Just when all hope seemed to be lost, Ted came up with a second, and considerably better, idea. He actually had a “No Questions Asked” favor he could ask of Lily. He told her to smash her phone… no questions asked… and she did. Problem solved. When Ted asks Marshall why he didn’t think of that himself, Marshall admits that he and Lily don’t keep things from one another.

Listening to what he revealed to Ted, Marshall decides there’s no other choice but to come clean to Lily about the judgeship. He not only tells her that he was offered the position, but that he also already accepted. Saying that Lily is livid is an understatement.

How I Met Your Mother airs Mondays on CBS at 8/7c.
