‘How I Met Your Mother’ Recap: Barney & Robin's Minister Dies; Lily Finds Out About Marshall's Judgeship

How I Met Your Mother’s sixth episode of its ninth and final season, “Knight Vision,” introduced the minister who would be officiating Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) Fairhampton nuptials and set up Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall’s (Jason Segel) inevitable discussion about his judgeship, while Ted (Josh Radnor) sought and failed to find a suitable wedding hookup.

Barney and Robin know that the story of how they met and fell in love isn’t exactly made for ministers’ ears, so they decide to tell the minister (Gilmore Girls’ Edward Herrmann) Marshall and Lily’s meet-cute story in place of their own. The fake story was complete with a fake flashback of Robin and Barney costumed as goth Lily and t-shirt-clad Marshall. Eventually, of course, the truth comes out – the cheating, the lying, the drinking and general debauchery. The reverend says they’re killing him with their tale of love, and then he quite literally dies.

Ted, meanwhile, is on a mission to find the right woman to hook up over the weekend – someone not too crazy, but vulnerable enough to want to sleep with him. His options get narrowed down to Robin’s college roommate Sophia, daughter of Barney's mom's best friend Cassie or Barney’s new coworker Grace. Ted chooses Cassie and learns that she’s rebounding from a break-up and just got fired over the phone. Needless to say, he picked the wrong girl and declines to hook up with her, which is conceivably a good thing for “the mother.”

As for Marshall, he’s still making his way to the East Coast with Daphne (Sherri Shepherd). The odd couple is discussing Marshall’s judge job offer and how he’s going to break the news to Lily, who is still under the impression that he’s heading to Rome with her. Daphne tries to help Marshall plot out how he’s going to tell Lily about the job, when the two find out they’re legal nemesis – he’s a green energy lawyer, while she’s a big oil lobbyist. After a spat, Daphne texts Lily from Marshall’s phone, telling her he’s taken the job.

On the next How I Met Your Mother, Barney and Robin will have to find someone new to marry them, while Lily and Marshall will finally confront the reality that their professions are pulling them to two different continents.

How I Met Your Mother airs Mondays on CBS at 8/7c.
