There are box office bombs, and then there was the opening weekend for How Do You Know, the James Brooks-directed romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson. The movie, which cost $120 million to make, took in $7.6 million this weekend, barely half of Witherspoon's $15 million paycheck.
Tron Legacy, a sequel released 28 years after the original Tron, topped the box office by taking in $43.6 million, and sold about 2.5 times the number of tickets as the original Tron. Yogi Bear, the 3-D animated movie based on the popular cartoon and features voice work from Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, finished second with an unimpressive $16.7 million.
Many awards-season films posted sizable gains as they expanded into wide release. The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, earned $12.4 million playing on 3,000 screens, while The Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, took in $8.7 million on about 1,150 screens. Colin Firth's The King's Speech took in an average of $25,000 per theater, with a gross of almost $1.1 million in just 43 theaters.
Business was down this weekend compared to this same weekend a year ago, when James Cameron's epic Avatar was released. But overall, this weekend fared much better than last week, posting over a 50 percent gain in total gross. —ISHITA SINGH
