House Speaker Mike Johnson Refuses To Say Whether He Considers The Destruction Of Embryos ‘Murder’

House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to say whether embryos are “children” when repeatedly pressed in a new interview.

In the interview with CBS News, Johnson stated, “If you do believe that life begins at conception, it’s a really important question to wrestle with.”

When asked if the destruction of an embryo constitutes a “murder,” Johnson’s response was vague. In the past, Johnson has held strong opinions on abortion rights and the belief that life begins at conception.

Johnson said that in vitro fertilization is an issue that “policymakers have to determine how to handle.”

He revealed that he believes that IVF policy should not be left up to Congress but rather it should be the state’s responsibility to decide.

“In some states, like in Louisiana, there’s a limit on the number of embryos that can be created because they’re sensitive to that issue,” he said. “But it’s something that every state has to wrestle with and I think Alabama has done a good job of it.”

“It’s something that we’ve got to grapple with. It’s a brave new world. IVF’s only been invented, I think, in the early 70s,” he added.

Recently, the Alabama governor signed legislation declaring that IVF providers will be shielded from legal liability after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos could be considered children under the state.

Alabama Chief Justice Tom Parker appeared in an interview with a QAnon conspiracy theorist on the same day as this ruling was issued, saying, “God created government.”

In January, Johnson and 125 other Republicans backed a House bill that could have potentially banned IVF procedures nationwide.

During President Joe Biden‘s State of the Union Address, Johnson was seen making face displeased faces in the background.
