‘House of Cards’ Could End After Second Season

House of Cards might not continue on after its sophomore season, which is currently in production and slated for release in 2014.

The Netflix original series starring Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Kate Mara made history when it received a trio of Primetime Emmy Awards. Though Spacey, Penn and House of Cards itself got nods – but no wins – in the major categories, their accomplishment as a web series was a major one. Despite the considerable critical success, the political drama series could be on its way out.

House of Cards is only going to go a second season and I think that’s it,” executive producer Rick Cleveland said last week at the Vancouver International Film Festival, reported GoldDerby.

In the series, Spacey plays House majority whip Francis Underwood – a scheming southern Democrat determined to achieve higher office. Most of the first season saw Francis employ one ruse after another as part of his master plot to become a fixture in the West Wing. With the steely encouragement of his wife (Penn) and the aid of reporter and paramour Zoe Barnes (Mara), Francis succeeds more often than he fails but still falls short of his ambition.

With that primary arc in mind, it stands to reason that the second season will have to either end with Rep. Underwood exactly where he wants to be – or with his metaphorical house of cards crashing irrevocably. That is if the second season is the Netflix show’s last. Screenwriter Beau Willimon doesn’t seem to think that’s the case.

Willimon took to Twitter back in August and stated that he would be happy to write “many” more episodes for House of Cards.

House of Cards’ second season will likely be available for viewing on Netflix streaming sometime in February 2014.
