Crowned the Dirtiest Hotel in America by TripAdvisor, the Hotel Carter is now for sale and is expected to go for around $180 million.
The Hotel Carter has a prime Manhattan location for tourists, as it is situated on West 43rd Street just off Times Square. It was also named the Dirtiest Hotel three times on TripAdvisor, but the survey ended in 2012.
“It’s the dirtiest, and best located hotel in New York City… It was under-managed and neglected,” said Lawrence Wolfe, representative of the seller.
In fact, the degree of cleanliness seems not to have been a factor in many guests’ decisions to stay at the Hotel Carter. Many reviewers on TripAdvisor note that the hotel’s main selling point was it’s low rates.
“There are two good reasons to stay at Hotel Carter: it’s cheap and in Times Square,” reads one recent review.
Other guests were less enthusiastic, with one review titled, “Absolutely vile! Unsafe, nasty and falling down.”
“I have no idea how this place has passed any kind of health and safety inspection,” reads the review.
Another review, titled “Simply don’t go there,” alleges that staying at the Hotel Carter would “ruin your whole stay in NYC.”
The Hotel Carter was first opened in 1930 under the name Hotel Dixie, and has recently been under scrutiny for code violations and a homicide.
