The cast of Homeland spilled new details on what fans can expect when the hit thriller returns for its third season in September in a new behind-the-scenes video.
Season 2 ended with Brody (Damian Lewis) going on the run after a bomb in his car destroys the CIA. Season 3 picks up with Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) trying to deal with the aftermath of the bomb and Brody’s assumed culpability. In a press release in May, Showtime described Homeland’s third season as a “global manhunt” for Brody.
From the looks of a new preview released on Sunday, Saul and Carrie may very well find themselves at odds as the desperate search for Brody heats up. Carrie swears to clear Brody’s name, putting her at odds with Saul and the government, who appear to have assembled a big committee to get to the bottom of why and how Brody was able to bring a bomb to the CIA’s doorstep.
In the preview, Danes teases that Carrie finds herself going down a slippery slope.
“This season, Carrie feels hugely culpable. She’s under the impression that taking her medication dulled her mind,” Danes says.
As a result, Carrie refuses to take her medication. In addition to her mental health problems, Carrie will be caught in the middle of CIA politics, and could be blamed for the events of the season two finale.
“Carrie might be used as a scapegoat,” Danes hints in the video.
Meanwhile Saul, Carrie’s mentor and safety net, is busy dealing with his own problems. Namely, trying to make sure the government doesn’t decide to shut down the CIA.
“All of a sudden he [Saul] finds himself making decisions and with the actual existence of the CIA in question, he has to make some very uncharacteristic choices,” producer Howard Gordon told Entertainment Weekly in July.
Brody will be absent for the first two episodes of the season, and Morena Baccarin reveals in the video that he leaves the Brody family more destroyed than ever. The cast were careful not to spill too many details as to Brody’s whereabouts or escape plan, but Damian Lewis did say this about his duplicitous alter ego, “You won’t see Brody as a Congressman this season, you won’t see him as a marine.”
Danes sums up everything at the end, telling viewers in no uncertain terms that season three of Homeland will be far from happy-go-lucky.
“They’re all suffering in their respective corners in the hope they’ll find their way back to each other over the course of the season,” Danes says.
Homeland Season three will premiere on Showtime Sept. 29.
