When Homeland returns for its fifth season, it will pick up more than two years after the events in the season 4 finale and will be set in Europe.
Homeland star Claire Danes and the show’s creator Alex Gansa were present at PaleyFest at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood Friday night when they spilled some spoilers about the next season of the Showtime drama. According to Gansa, the show will jump ahead two and a half years and will likely shift filming locations from Cape Town, South Africa – which served as Iran – to Germany.
While Danes’ character Carrie Mathison has stepped away from the CIA briefly before in the show, when it returns, she “will no longer be an intelligence officer,” according to Gansa. Danes, in reference to the season’s likely filming location, quipped, “She’s making beer.”
In regards to Carrie’s relationship with her longtime partner in the CIA Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend), it remains to be seen how it will progress. If executive producer Meredith Stiehm has anything to say about it, it’s not over.
“I was a fierce advocate for it,” Stiehm said of the relationship “I felt there was something in the air (between the two) from day one.”
Over the course of its four seasons, Homeland has dared to cover a number of tough topics in regards to terrorism – both at home and abroad. For Gansa, he’ll have to decide if ISIS will find its way into the storyline.
“Do we give them a platform?” Gansa said. “I don’t know. It’s an interesting question…We’re one of the few shows that gets to really comment on current events. We take that responsibility very seriously.”
